Why you’re still exhausted after “resting”

Real Rest vs Fake Rest

I used to think I was resting.

You know the routine.

Workout done.
Dinner finished.
Time to collapse on the couch and scroll Instagram for an hour.

In my head I was like:

“Perfect. I deserve this. I’m relaxing.”

But here’s the thing.

Scrolling isn’t actually rest.

It’s what I now call fake rest.

And I used to do it constantly.

Why Scrolling Feels Like Rest (But isn’t)

When we scroll, our brain is still working.

Every post is new information your brain has to process:

• new images
• new opinions
• new comparisons
• new emotional reactions

Your brain has to analyze, react, and evaluate all of it.

So instead of recovering…

your nervous system stays stimulated.

There’s actually science behind this.

Research shows constant digital stimulation triggers dopamine spikes, keeping your brain in seeking mode instead of recovery mode.

Translation?

Your brain thinks it’s searching for the next interesting thing.

Not resting.

Which explains why after an hour of scrolling you often feel:

• mentally fried
• weirdly anxious
• still tired
• not actually refreshed

Your body never switched into parasympathetic mode , the state where real recovery happens.

And that’s where all the magic happens:

• muscle recovery
• hormone balance
• better sleep
• nervous system regulation

Real rest isn’t stimulation.

It’s quieting the brain.

What Real Rest Actually Looks Like

Real rest is actually kind of boring.

And that’s why it works.

Things like:

• sitting outside for 10 minutes
• walking without music
• breathing exercises
• reading something calming
• stretching
• cooking something simple

Sometimes I’ll literally lay on the floor for 5 minutes and stare at the ceiling.

Your nervous system finally gets the signal:

“We’re safe. You can relax now.”

And that’s when recovery actually begins.

Supplements that actually support recovery

Lifestyle always comes first… but there are a few supplements that can support real recovery.

Here are some of my favorites.

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body.

It helps with:

• muscle relaxation
• nervous system regulation
• deeper sleep

Many people are actually magnesium deficient, especially if they train hard or deal with stress.

Glycine

Glycine is an amino acid that helps lower body temperature and improve sleep quality.

It’s great for recovery because it also supports collagen and tissue repair.

L-Theanine

This amino acid (found naturally in green tea) helps calm the brain without making you sleepy.

It increases alpha brain waves, which are associated with relaxation and creativity.

Think calm focus instead of sedation.

Electrolytes

If you’re training hard or sweating a lot, electrolytes are huge for recovery.

They help regulate:

• nerve signals
• hydration
• muscle contraction
• energy levels

Low electrolytes can make you feel fatigued even when you're resting.

My New Favorite Evening Ritual

Instead of scrolling every night, I’ve started doing something simple.

I make a small dessert and actually sit down and enjoy it.

No phone.

No TV.

Just eating slowly and relaxing.

It sounds small… but it feels like a reset button for the nervous system.

So, I thought I’d share one of my favorites.

Spring Berry Yogurt Crumble

This one taste indulgent but is actually great for blood sugar and gut health.

Ingredients

1 cup Greek yogurt
½ cup mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
1 tbsp crushed walnuts or almonds
1 tsp honey or maple syrup
dash of cinnamon
optional: a few dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Add yogurt to a bowl

  2. Top with berries

  3. Sprinkle nuts on top

  4. Drizzle honey

  5. Add cinnamon

Done in two minutes.

You get:

• protein
• fiber
• antioxidants
• healthy fats

And honestly it tastes like something you'd get at a cute café.

Try This Tonight

Instead of scrolling for an hour tonight…

Try 10 minutes of real rest.

Sit outside.
Stretch.
Make the berry dessert.

And just be.

Your nervous system will thank you.

And your sleep probably will too.
