When your bed feels better than the gym š
Why I stopped motivating myself with the mirror, and started doing it for my brain
Can I be honest with you for a second?
Staying consistent with movement is not always easy.
Especially in the winter.
When itās dark early.
Cold.
Youāre tired.
Work feels heavier.
And your bed feels extra comfortable. š
Some days, getting dressed and going to the gym feels like⦠a lot.
And Iāve definitely had those weeks where Iām like,
āIāll start again on Monday.ā
(We all know how that goes.)
But something shifted for me when I learned what movement actually does to the brain.
Not just the body.
The Thing That Changed Everything for Me
Thereās something called BDNF - Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor.
Think of it as support for your brainās ability to:
Stay focused
Regulate emotions
Handle stress
Learn and adapt
Feel mentally steady
And one of the best ways to increase it?
Movement.
So now, when I donāt feel motivated, I donāt think:
āI need to look a certain way.ā
I think:
āIām taking care of my brain today.ā
That feels different.
Gentler.
More supportive.
More sustainable.
What Actually Helps Me Stay Active (In Real Life)
Not in a āperfect routineā way.
In a real, human way.
Walking
On tired days, I walk.
Outside.
On the treadmill.
With a podcast.
It always helps clear my head.
Strength Training
Lifting reminds me:
āIām strong. I can handle things.ā
That confidence carries into life.
Short Intense Sessions
Once in a while, I push.
Not every day.
Not obsessively.
Just enough to reset my system.
Gentle Days
Stretching. Mobility. Yoga.
These days matter too.
Rest is part of consistency.
Trying New Things
New routines = new brain connections.
Novelty wakes your brain up.
And Nutrition Matters Too š
Movement supports BDNF.
But so does what we eat.
And in the winter, when I want comfort and energy, I lean on simple ābrain foodā recipes that donāt feel like work.
Hereās one of my favorites.

š« My Go-To Brain-Boosting Blueberry Smoothie
This supports BDNF with antioxidants, omega-3s, and polyphenols - and it tastes like a treat.
Ingredients:
1 cup frozen blueberries š«
½ banana š
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp ground flax or chia seeds
1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice)
Optional: scoop of protein powder
Blend & enjoy š
Thatās it.
No stress. No fancy prep.
Just brain support in a cup.
The Truth About Consistency
Consistency doesnāt mean ānever missing.ā
It means:
Coming back.
Not quitting.
Being kind to yourself after off days.
Some seasons youāll do more.
Some seasons youāll do less.
Both are normal.
Especially in Winterā¦
Winter is hard.
Less sunlight.
Less energy.
More couch time. š
If youāre struggling right now, youāre not lazy.
Youāre human.
Start small.
10 minutes.
A walk.
A stretch.
One smoothie.
One choice for yourself.
It all adds up.
Why I Keep Choosing Movement
I donāt move because Iām perfect.
I move because it helps me feel:
Clearer.
Calmer.
More grounded.
More like myself.
It helps me show up better for my work, my daughter, my life⦠and for you.
That matters to me.

One Last Reminder
If today all you can do is:
ā Take a walk
ā Stretch for 5 minutes
ā Make a smoothie
ā Show up imperfectly
That counts.
Your brain is still benefiting.
And Iām proud of you for trying.
Always.
