I Didn’t Realize How Much I Needed the Sun... Until It Came Back
Why your energy, mood, and focus shift with sunlight, and how to use it as a daily reset
If you’re on the East Coast, you already know:
this winter has been a lot.
Cold that lingers
Gray that overstays its welcome
Days that feel heavier than they should
And I’ve been feeling it, in my mood, my energy, my focus.
Like my nervous system has been running on low battery for weeks.
But here’s the part that matters:
There’s real science behind why the darker months feel harder…
and why one warm, sunny day can feel like a full reset.
This week, when the sun finally came out, I stepped outside and felt my whole system shift.
Not mentally
Biologically
Your Nervous System Has Been Waiting for This
We forget that our bodies were built for the outdoors.
Not for:
• recycled indoor air
• artificial lighting
• constant screen exposure
When you step outside, your system receives signals it can’t get indoors:
Depth and distance → your eyes relax
Fresh air → your breathing deepens
Natural sound → your vagus nerve calms
Movement → stress hormones begin to metabolize
Open space → your brain registers safety
This is why that first warm day feels like you again.
Because your biology is finally getting what it needs.
Morning Sunlight: The Most Underrated Regulator
One habit I’ve been recommitting to:
Stepping outside first thing in the morning even if it’s brief.
Morning light helps:
Set your circadian rhythm
Stabilize your cortisol curve
Improve mood
Increase daytime energy
Support better sleep
Your brain reads morning light as:
“You’re safe. You can focus. You can function.”
Simple input.
Massive impact.

Sunlight & Vitamin D, The Missing Link
Here’s what often gets overlooked:
Sunlight is how your body naturally produces vitamin D.
And vitamin D plays a key role in:
Mood regulation
Immune health
Hormone balance
Inflammation
Bone strength
Low sunlight → lower vitamin D → lower energy, lower mood.
This isn’t just “winter blues.”
It’s your body responding exactly how it’s designed to.
A Simple Rule I’m bringing into spring
If you want:
• better energy
• better mood
• clearer focus
• more emotional stability
• better sleep
Try this:
Step outside once in the morning
and once in the afternoon
No complicated routine.
No pressure.
Just light, air, and a few minutes of movement.
Let your nervous system reset itself.
A Light Spring Morning Ritual
Here’s something simple I’ve been pairing with my mornings lately:
Fluffy Strawberry‑Vanilla Protein Pancakes
Light, fun, and perfect for those first warm spring mornings.
Ingredients (1–2 servings)
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup Greek yogurt (or dairy‑free yogurt)
- ¼ cup milk of choice
- ¼ cup oat flour (or blend oats into flour)
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup chopped strawberries (fresh or frozen)
- Optional: pinch of cinnamon, drizzle of honey or maple syrup
Instructions
1. In a bowl, whisk egg, yogurt, milk, and vanilla
2. Add protein powder, oat flour, and baking powder. Mix until smooth
3. Fold in chopped strawberries
4. Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium‑low
5. Pour small pancakes and cook until bubbles form, then flip
6. Serve warm with extra strawberries and a drizzle of honey or maple syrup
Why this works for spring
Strawberries give that bright, fresh, “spring is finally here” flavor without needing citrus.
Vanilla + berries feel light and energizing, perfect for warmer mornings.
Protein + oats keep your energy stable after your morning sunlight.
Warm but fresh, ideal for that in‑between weather when you want comfort without heaviness.
Where to go from here
If this resonated, don’t stop at just knowing this.
Start using it.
Because regulation isn’t built on information.
It’s built on consistent inputs.
I’ve put together a simple, structured reset you can follow something that helps you actually apply this into your day without overthinking it.
It walks you through:
• how to use morning + afternoon light properly
• how to pair it with movement and meals
• how to support your nervous system consistently
You can start with that and build from there.
Because feeling clear, steady, and like yourself again
shouldn’t depend on luck with the weather.
